Rockingham Dragway

Nothing says high performance like Chrysler’s 426 cubic inch hemi engine and nowhere outside of Detroit will you find more hemis in one place than you will at Rockingham Dragway, site this week of the 22nd annual MOPAR at the Rock drag race and car show.

Although the event is a day-long celebration of everything MOPAR featuring the Racin’ Junk Swap Meet, the Auto Metal Direct all-Chrysler car and truck show and a full complement of drag races for Plymouths, Dodges, Chryslers, DeSotos and Jeeps, the highlight for many will be the nostalgic Super Stock Hemi Shootout featuring “Bullet Bob” Reed’s 1968 Plymouth hemi-Barracudas.

Also in the “shootout” mix will be Kenny Crosswhite and the Crosswhite Brothers’ 1965 Dodge Coronet, and the “Rapid Ronnie” Lyles Nostalgia Pro Stock Duster of Eugene Coard.

The all-MOPAR, all-the-time format will be reserved for Saturday but the track will be open for testing on Friday night at a special $25 rate for car and driver.  Friday spectator admission is $12. Saturday adult tickets are $20 with children 12 and under free when accompanied by a ticketed adult.  Parking is free in Rockingham’s main lot.

The Saturday program is expected to attract Chrysler products from every era including Chrysler Cordobas, LeBarons and Sebrings, Plymouth Furys, Belvederes, Arrows, Satellites and Prowlers and Dodge Darts, Coronets, Chargers, Challengers, Aspens and Avengers as well as a full range of Ram trucks and Dodge and Plymouth vans.

In addition to the Hemi Shootout, all year models of the Dodge Challenger will compete in the S & W Race Cars Challenger Shootout, limited to street cars on street tires with a special S & W Trophy awarded to the winner.  Champions will also be crowned in Pro ET (with a $1,200 top prize), Footbrake and Trophy classes with competition restricted to Chrysler products only.  The car show will award first and second place trophies in 26 classes along with and Editor’s Choice award and awards for Best-of-Show and Best Truck.

MOPAR at the Rock, a staple at Rockingham Dragway for more than two decades, is part of the Mega MOPAR national series.
